  2. "-Brazilians have voted into office a man who wants to destroy the Amazon rainforest. Why do people keep ignoring the call to save the planet in favor of economic policies that will affect the survival of their offspring?

I will try to answer to the letter, explaining why. Please do not be angry with me, because I do not agree with the motives, I’m just translating to you what the folks around me feel, and why do I understand their motives for having elected Jair Bolsonaro the next Brazilian president.

We live in a civil war. Last year alone, 64.000 Brazilians died with their shoes on (i.e. a violent death). Me and my colleagues that finished high school with me in the year ‘81, we held a convention in a city not far from Recife, where I live. One of us did not come back home, killed by robbers on his way back to his wife and children. My father in law was assassinated by thugs that wanted to rob his house and were recognised by him. My 17 year old son was mugged twice last year. It is very close to us. When we talk about it, we think “who’s next? Me?”

The Brazilian Establishment, dominated by a leftist tint, considers criminals as people who are wronged by an unjust society. Our criminal law is very lax. If you’re under 18, the maximum penalty appliable to you is three years. This means that, after killing your first Brazilian, anyone is yours to kill or rape! You already incurred the maximum penalty, any other crime is of no consequence to you. You have the basic human right to kill Brazilians anytime anywhere until you’re 18. Suck it, 007!

What do the polititians in Brazil say about it? NOTHING. They offer no solution, and promise to do more of the same. It’s all in improving economics and education, they say. My fellow Brazilians understand that as a “We’re OK if 70.000 of you die violently next year. Live with that”.

Then comes a demagogue who says “criminals are criminals, not social constructs”. “Human rights for the right humans”. “17 year old criminals are not children, they are criminals”. THIS IS MUSIC FOR THE EARS OF WORRIED BRAZLIANS WHO CARE ABOUT THE SURVIVAL OF THEIR OFFSPRING.

Bolsonaro was not the best candidate. HE WAS THE ONLY ONE who said he cared about our most urgent fear. Every day I fear not coming back home to my kids. Every day I fear my kids not coming back home to me.

That, and the astonishingly huge level of corruption of the leftist party who ruled us for the last 13 years made Bolsonaro president.

    That’s why.

Now, please allow me to expose MY OPINION on the premises of the question. The Brazilian president has not that much power to stop the burning of the Amazon. As long as people consume prodigal quantities of meat, and buy our mahogany, Amazonia will burn in an accelerated way. It’s profitable. Do you care about deflorestation here and everywhere? Eat less meat. We burn the Amazon in order to put cows where the forest once was for you to eat those cows, or else to grow soy for you to eat the pig that eats that soy.

Now that China has stopped buying american soybeans, the pressure for unforested land will be much bigger. Bolsonaro or no Bolsonaro.

Thanks for reading. You do not need to agree with me, this is only an opinion, to be weighed against different others."
